Criteria


1. Identify, define, and give an example of the 6 criteria of newsworthiness.

Criteria 1: Unusualness
Definition: An event that is different or out of the ordinary
Example: A person dying in a unusual way

Criteria 2: Significance
Definition: Take a toll on the average person's life
Example: Taxes, elections, wars, scientific discoveries

Criteria 3: Timeliness
Definition: News that is happening right now
Example: Flood while it is happening

Criteria 4: Proximity
Definition: Nearby events
Example: local school, new state tax law, proposed regional highway

Criteria 5: Prominence
Definition: well-known people, buildings, or places are involved
Example: A movie star who gets arrested

Criteria 6: Human Interest
Definition: The more qualities it has, the more newsworthy. Catches our interest
Example: A minister who runs a drop-in center for troubled teens

2. On page 23 it discusses the differences between print journalism and broadcast journalism. Please describe 3 ways they are different and explain.

One way is print journalism is more in-depth and has more coverage.

Another way is broadcast journalism is better for reporting fast-breaking stories.

One more way is broadcasting can provide the most dramatic news coverage.
